Open Charter School

This again is another Cool Schools Project where DWP donated 88 trees for an elementary school campus. Working closely with Treepeople and the eager parents and staff of the school, we were able to design for a total of 160 trees the balance of which would come from donations and Proposition BB money (a program that in addition to providing upgrades to school infrastructure within the classroom such as A/C and computer

networking would also remove asphalt from playgrounds in favor of the greening of the campus). The design features four California specific eco-quadrants between the school's buildings including, a redwood forest, an oak forest, a riparian (river) forest, and a desert forest.

These areas provide environmental education opportunities with the students. Watershed issues also came to bear at this campus as well with a large cistern system being installed to allow rainwater during the rainy season to be used again for irrigation during the drier summer months. The campus was situated on a heavy clay soil foundation which made recharge of groundwater virtually impossible. These renderings represent the schematic design of the campus as well as the layout of the playground areas which I designed on an angle to break up the linearity of the site's buildings and one photo of the actual tree plantings.
