Edmisten Residence
This well-crafted Spanish style home in Glendale lacked a focused
and attractive entry to the house and the existing driveway dominated
the space with too much grey concrete. One of the biggest challenges
was the need for a turn around space for the newly configured driveway.
The existing space was very narrow and awkwardly angled, but we
were able to eek out some additional space by creating a circular
motor court that softened the original layout and created an axial
relationship with the front door. The addition of a dark rich brown
colored concrete allowed the motor court to recede from your perceived
view and reduced glare to focus more attention on the new garden.
As the owners already had an unused pedestrian gate that entered
a smaller space off the motor court, I suggested reactivating that
entry and visually separating the motor court from a new created
entry court with the addition of a colonnade and overhead wood arbor.
The effect was immediate and with the addition of a small water
fountain and some future planting, this new courtyard and entry
became the epitome of the classic Mediterranean courtyard.
