Holmby Hills
Residence
This large estate in the Holmby hills sits on 3 acres and was completed
in 2004. The style of the house by Hablinski/Manion Architects is
English with a beautiful tan brick facade and dark mahogany wood
trim. The owner expressed an attraction to perennial gardens in
the style of Gertrude Jekyll, a legendary English garden designer
from the early part of the 20th century who specialize in color
specific perennial borders exhibiting a wildness within a structured
space.
This garden is dominated by a great lawn off the rear of the house
which is surrounded by 3 strong perennial borders. The central border
uses flowers in hot shades of reds, magentas, and oranges and sometimes
white along with burgundy and red foliage for additional interest.
The west border around the rose arbor, is mostly pinks and whites
and the east border is a yellow and gray border. The corners are
anchored by groves of sycamore trees within a woodland circle featuring
ferns and columbine. Other garden features include a woodland path
around the perimeter of the upper garden, a formal boxwood hedge
garden at the front entrance, a mulberry arbor where young mulberry
trees are being trained onto a metal frame to form a covered seating
area, an herb knot garden, a statuary garden, a pool area with hot
oranges and reds behind a boxwood hedge, a fruit orchard, and finally
a family terrace perennial garden planted in blues, purples, and
whites. The garden will continue to improve and evolve over time
and additional photos will be added periodically.
